Cadwell Park Race Report 2012

compactCladwellParkJune2012In stark contrast to Brands Hatch, rounds 3 and 4 held at Cadwell Park Circuit for the GAZ Shocks BMW Compact Cup sponsored by MAHA UK were bathed in glorious sunshine. Labelled by many drivers in the field as the British “Monaco”, Cadwell Park offers up a narrow circuit that places driver ability and bravery at the forefront of its twisting unforgiving nature. So it was with some amount of trepidation that 23 cars took to the circuit for the second time this season for qualifying.

The topology of the circuit means that from early in the morning the surface is bathed in sunshine so the drivers were greeted a little after 9:20 with an ever warming track with one objective in mind; Complete three banker laps, building in pace gradually and then push harder to see what could be achieved with the right positioning of the car. Soon their laps were up and all would know very shortly how they had done. Qualifying would see the top eight covered by a meagre 1.4 seconds led by Ryan Bensley in car 63 the MAHA Ltd 2012 sponsor car topping the time sheets with a time of 1:48.53, car 53 Andrew Tsang would line up alongside for company himself qualifying 0.16 of a second behind, if times produced from the session were anything to go by the running would be close all the way through the pack.

A small pause must be sought at this point, although car 28 driven by Alan O’Neill and prepared by the hard working students of the Birmingham City College of Motorsport would make it out for the session, O’Neill would struggle round the laps at an ever slowing pace and sadly clutch issues would preclude them from entering their first race for the season. Rest assured though, the boys are nothing if not determined to have the car ready for the next round at Donnington in June.

Compact Cup Soaks up the first rounds

comactCupStart may2012Marking the opening of one of the hottest Tin Top series for 2012, the GAZ Shocks BMW Compact Cup took to Brands Hatch on Sunday for rounds one and two.

Conditions the day before the opening round were terrible and during the night had worsened considerably; the weatherman was however promising respite for the afternoon races but the morning’s qualifying session would have to make do with drizzle and a very damp circuit. The drivers took to the track for the first qualifying session of the season and the opening few laps were spent adjusting to the slippery surface and tip toeing through what is arguably the hardest corner in British Motorsport – the notorious Paddock Hill bend. Speaking to Paul McErlean [Series Director] the night before he said he was nervous, having raced a number of times at Brands Hatch, he knew how unforgiving the corner could be in the wet. However the drivers rapidly began to find their footing and times were being set and improved upon.

The results from qualifying decide the starting positions for the two races; the drivers best time would stand as their starting position for race one and second best time for race two. Alex Dew would take the first pole position of the season with guest driver for the weekend with a time of 1:07.44.  RAW Motorsports Robin Welsh took second with a 1:07.51 the two swapping positions for race two.  The same pattern also replicated on the second row with series sponsor Powerflex’s Director David Power taking to third position with a time of 1:08.17 and Stuart Voyce completed the second row with and time of 1:08.53 the two drivers reversed for race two. All in all 23 cars qualified and with only one minor mishap, all made their way back to the paddock under their own steam, quite an achievement considering the number of rookies on the grid.

Hall & Boston hatch wins at Brands

rob broston brands hatch may2012A race-long battle between Adrian Hall and David and Rob Fenn thrilled the Brands Hatch DTM crowd in Lotus Cup UK last Sunday. The pair were barely inches apart throughout the race and only separated during the pitstop sequence when Hall elected to come in early.

However a late race stoppage deprived spectators of a grandstand finish as Jamie Stanley chased down the leaders in the GWS Exige. Just as he was about to line up an attack on 2-Eleven class winner Marcus Jewell, Phil Capstick left the circuit in the other Exige Cup class car and was stranded in the gravel at Clearways. Chris Randall was also part of the action early on, taking pole and leading the initial stages but was stymied by a problem that saw him hand over to regular driver Campbell Cassidy after losing several laps in the pits.
